Navigating a Blue “Silk Road” – Interview with Wang Chaoyong, Founder and CEO of China Equity Group

As we say goodbye to the summer,  I thought I’d share with you a somewhat off-topic interview, just for fun (if its relevance to Essinova is not immediate).

China Early Stage Investor Forum and Awards – Shanghai, March 3-4, 2011

Angel investing in the American sense is still nascent in China / Asia, but may not be for very long, as things have a way of growing fast there.  Angel investment, or BA (Business Angel investment) as the more often used term there, is usually much smaller in terms of scale and development than in the US market.  However Chinese government agencies at all levels and the Chinese business and investment community are increasingly recognising the incubation benefits of BA investment in SMEs in their early stages.

Essinova is one of the channel partners for an interesting event coming up, focusing on these early stage investments. The sectors represented include health sciences, cleantech, Internet, IT, mobile and general.  Over 40 experienced investors will share their

early stage adventures in Asia.  More information about the event and registration form can be found here. Essinova members receive special discounts to the event, especially if booked early.

Oh, Social Media

I resisted FaceBook for the longest time.  I still can’t quite decipher or use the @s, #s or random URLs in Tweets.   With all my internal conflicts about the Social Media craze, I knew I’d be ignoring it at my own peril.

At David Perry’s kind invitation, I attended his seminar “How to Make Money with Social Media” today.  The event was part of the “New Media Made Easy” series, a training program organized by his firm (David Perry & Associates) focused on social media.

It hasn’t turned me into a willing believer, but for the grudging conformist in me, practical tips were aplenty.   And while I continue to see Twitter as a proliferator of garbage, I admit that it is also a powerful disseminator of good.  It still stirred great envy though, when it was mentioned that Apple has neither a FaceBook page nor a Twitter account.  The panelist made the mention as an example of corporate mistakes, while acknowledging that Apple is one of the few companies that can get away with it.  For me, this is yet another reason that I wish I were Apple, on top of the thousand obvious ones!

As a China admirer, David talked about social media in China.  His knowledge in the area blew me away, but the most exciting tidbit I learned from him, about my native country, is that netizens there are much more used to long form videos, watching full episodes of shows online.  That’s good news for Essinova, even though my shows are not studded with pop stars.  I would think cyber behaviors spill over from one area to another.

It is for ourselves

I’ve been searching for a better phrase to encapsulate Essinova‘s purpose.  Its mission slogan  currently states:

“A Media Community for Innovation in Human Healthcare and Planet Preservation”

… which doesn’t feel quite what I’m trying to say.

It has occurred to me in the past few weeks that the planet will be fine; in fact after we destroy nature and render ourselves extinct, the planet will find a way to restore itself and will probably be in better shape without us, even though it will probably miss the blip of fun it witnessed of this special species called humans, with all  our love, hate, joy, suffering; our art and music to express and enchant, our science to understand ourselves and everything around us, our technologies to push our limits for better or for worse, our politics to organize, our wars to kill each other, our religions to attempt meaning of our existence; our amazing intelligence and our complicated soul…

The planet will be fine.  It is us, the Homo sapiens, that are in desperate need of preservation.

“Innovation for the Well Being of Humanity”

… is what I’ll change it to.  Our individual well-being against diseases.  Our collective well-being against self-induced mass extinction.

Let me sit on it a while longer, though.

Quiet first day

It’s about time to set up a blog.
